This is going to be a short one, because hey, guess what, it’s a novella. It’s also going to be a spoiler free review, due to the fact that I’m trying to be considerate of those who may not have read this book yet, as well as the fact that I have nothing substantial to say.
To be quite honest, this book, this novella, took me the longest to read of all the books so far in the series. According to my Goodreads it took me 11 days to read. For comparison I read Mist and Fury in 6 days and A Court of Thorns and Roses in 2 days.
Normally I read on my lunches while at work, and I simply had no desire to with this one. I either forgot to pull it out of my bag, or simply wanted to watch or do something else. It did not hold my attention in the slightest. I’d even go so far as to say it put me into a reading slump.
What I Loved
Well, this is awkward….
There was nothing I truly loved about this novella. It was pleasant enough. We get to mingle with familiar characters and being back in Velaris during the Winter Solstice was nice.
We do get glimpses of how everyone is doing after the battle with Hybern. Some better than others as to be expected, but nothing truly of note happens.
What I Didn’t Love
The novella…
I’m sorry, I really am. I just could not get behind this book.
It was ACOTAR goes Hallmark.
Almost every chapter is from a different character’s view, except Feyre and Rhys obviously, who as the main characters get a few extra chapters in their perspectives.
It felt like Maas really fluffed up an epilogue for Wings of Ruin or even prologue for the next book. What important parts (if you can call them that) there were in this novella, could have easily been put into a more concise epilogue/prologue.
In Closing
A Court of Frost and Starlight will make some ACOTAR fans super happy. It just did nothing for me. If you skipped this novella and went straight from Wings and Ruin to A Court of Silver Flames you won’t be missing anything.
I felt like this novella was a bunch of random stories and ideas Maas had thought of over the years for these characters. They don’t go into the main story plot anywhere logically, so she whipped them together into a Hallmark/Holiday novella.
I gave A Court of Frost and Starlight
